COPELABS in a Nutshell

COPELABS is a research unit of Universidade Lusófona, originally established as a new unit in Portugal, having been awarded the grade of “Good” in the last (2018) FCT evaluation, in the quality of small multidisciplinary unit.

Summary of results 2013-2017 (available via the Scientific Repository):

  • Scientific Results (22 book/book chapters; 68 publications in peer-reviewed international journals and/or conference proceedings). COPELABS had in average a peer-reviewed publication ratio per capita of 2.9 and a total of 17 Full-Time Equivalent Staff.
  • Spin-offs,2: Senception Lda (2017/2018 “Ones to Watch” European Business Award running for National Champion) and Immersive Lives.
  • Patents, 3 European IPRs.
  • Software, 14 relevant software contributions, technology readiness level 4-6.
  • Testbeds, 4 testbeds one globally interconnected (NDN Testbed).
  • Projects, 10, of which 5 were funded by FCT ( COPELABS UID/MULTI/04111/2013, Proxemics Data Lab UID/MULTI/04111/2016; UMM PTDC/EEA-TEL/105709/2008; UCR PTDC/EEA-TEL/103637/2008; FCT BD SFRH/BD/44005/2008); 2 were/are funded by the European Commission (EU IST FP7 ULOOP and H2020 UMOBILE); 1 was funded by industry (InnoWave Lablet), corresponding to approximately 900 000 Euros (COPELABS and/or COFAC c.r.l. budget).
  • Concluded PhDs, 4 (hosted by the unit). Over 2013-2017, the unit hosted 13 PhD students. 4 have concluded their studies (Namusale Chama; Antonio Oliveira; Waldir Moreira; Tauseef Jamal).

Between the period of 2013-2017, and in the context of the informatics activities and external funding, COPELABS has supported the hiring of 24 scholars via acquired projects. The duration of the grant was in average of 2.5 years. The majority of funded grants are equivalent to the value of an FCT BD (980 Euros per month) with a surplus.MMut of these 24 grants, 4 concerned postdocs grants (2 years in average).
