Leonardo De Carlo

My academic background is in Mathematical Physics, with a particular interest in thermodynamic systems and statistical mechanics. I completed my Master’s degree in Physics at the Dipartimento di Fisica of the Università di Roma “La Sapienza” in 2012. From November 2013 to November 2016, I pursued a PhD in Mathematics at the Gran Sasso Science Institute (GSSI) in L’Aquila, specializing in Probability Theory and models of nonequilibrium Statistical Mechanics. With the support of INFN (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare), I completed my thesis and defended my PhD in July 2017, with the degree awarded by the Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati (SISSA).

As a researcher, I held postdoctoral positions at the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) in Lisbon, the Scuola Normale Superiore (SNS) in Pisa, and LUISS Guido Carli in Rome. During these periods, I worked in some areas of Mathematical Physics and Probability, including dynamical systems, discrete Hodge decompositions, interacting particle systems, nonequilibrium statistical mechanics, hydrodynamics, and wavefunction-based models.

From June 2023 to February 2025, I worked in the HPC Department of CINECA as an HPC Data Engineer. Among other activities, I developed, trained, and evaluated deep learning models for weather forecasting within the pilot project “The AI General Circulation Model,” aimed at developing AI-based approaches to weather prediction.

From February 2025 to May 2026, I was an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at the Department of Computer Engineering and Information Systems of Universidade Lusófona in Lisbon. During this period, I was also an integrated member of the Grupo de Física Matemática (GFM) at Instituto Superior Técnico and a collaborator of COPELABS (ILIND, Universidade Lusófona), a research unit associated with the Center of Technology and Systems (CTS). In parallel, I resumed and further developed my previous research lines.

Since May 2026, I have been a contracted researcher at FCiências.ID – Associação para a Investigação e Desenvolvimento de Ciências and an integrated member of CEMS.UL – Centro de Estudos Matemáticos da Universidade de Lisboa. My current research is funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) through the CEEC Individual – 7th Edition, reference 2024.11679.CEECIND, for the project “Interacting ‘particle’ systems: stochastic and wave-mechanical directions.” The project develops research lines in interacting particle systems and nonequilibrium statistical mechanics, mathematical approaches to the classical–quantum boundary, and methods based on the calculus of variations and discrete exterior calculus applied to continuum mechanics. In parallel, I continue to teach at Universidade Lusófona as an Invited Assistant Professor.

Throughout my academic career, I have taught at Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD levels, including courses and activities in Probability, Statistics, Linear Algebra, Physics, and interacting particle systems. I have published research articles in international journals in Probability, Statistical Mechanics, and Mathematical Physics, and I have regularly served as a referee for scientific journals in these fields.
