Title: The stigma of tuberculosis: Perception of emotions in facial expression by patients in treatment (Estigma da Tuberculose: Perceção de emoções na expressão facial dos outros pelos doentes em tratamento)
Abstract: Despite there having been an effective treatment for over 50 years, TB remains a serious public health problem. The stigma associated with this disease is seen as a major barrier to disease control, and a cause of social distress. To better understand the processes underlying the stigma of TB and its impact on the daily lives of patients, particularly in the perception of emotions, this study was conducted. Do patients with tuberculosis identify more faces expressing disgust than those who are not sick? Do sick people with a high stigma consciousness identify more faces expressing disgust than the control group? To test these hypotheses, two groups of participants (TB patients and the control group) completed a questionnaire with 23 photographs of faces (neutral, ambiguous involving disgust, ambiguous involving contempt, and unambiguous faces) in which they identified the type of emotion and its intensity. The test also measured Stigma Consciousness, Interpersonal Rejection Related to Stigma, and Rejection Sensitivity, as well as demographic issues and disease duration. The results show that patients with high awareness of the stigma feel a high interpersonal rejection related to the stigma; that there is a difference in behavior of the two groups and the effects occur at the level of negative emotions, with the control group identifying more disgust, but the group of patients identifying more fear and anger. The discussion is based on the theory of stigma and emotion perception.
Teresa Nascimento is a Radiology Technician at Centro de Diagnóstico Pneumológico, in Santarém, since 2004. She defended her Bachelor’s thesis on Radiology in 2002 untitled “The occurrence of Breast cancer in Santo Tirso and Trofa’s districts” (“A incidência de cancro de mama nos concelhos de Santo Tirso e Trofa”) at Escola Superior de Tecnologias da Saúde do Porto and in the current year after her internship at COPELABS she received her MSc in Psychology of Intercultural Relations from ISCTE-IUL
Mauro Bianchi is a senior researcher at COPELABS, CTIP, and Associate Professor of ULHT. He received his PhD from the International Graduate College “Conflict and Cooperation between Social Groups” at Friederich-Schiller-Universität in Jena (Germany). His research focuses on intergroup relations and stereotyping. Currently he is interested in the automatic activation of social knowledge and its consequences for intergroup behavior (e.g., approach/avoidance motor responses towards members of social groups).

SITI is focused upon user-centric trends that are emerging in several fields of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), OSI Layers 2 and 3. As in other grassroots movements, the user will have an active say concerning services provided and consequently, concerning the techno-social environment that surrounds him/her.
This group is based (i.e. integrated members) on a core of scientifically active researchers from the former CEPCA (Pedro Gamito, Jorge Oliveira, Rodrigo Brito, Paulo Lopes, and Ana Loureiro) 2 more recent PhDs (Cristina Camilo and Bárbara Gonzalez). Note, however, that the CEPCA team (team size, funding and indicators included in 5.) changed substantially since 2008, when it had 8 PhDs (of which only PG remains) and 5 groups. In 2011-13 the team grew to 14 integrated PhDs in 2-3 groups. By 2013, however, it was clear that the bulk of CEPCA output of international level (13 of the 14 indicators in table 5.) was the responsibility of the neurocognitive/cyber therapy-focused group, with only 3 PhD and 2 non-PhD members (PI: PG). The inevitable consolidation of CEPCA around this core group pointed to the desirability of joining forces with an informatics team – SITILABS – to create COPELABS as an interdisciplinary R&D unit (see Description of the R&D unit).
