11.2018: COPELABS congratulates Dr. Rute C. Sofia for becoming an Associate Editor of IEEE Access, for the period of 2018 to 2023.

IEEE Access is an award-winning, multidisciplinary, all-electronic archival journal, continuously presenting the results of original research or development across all of IEEE’s fields of interest. Supported by author publication fees, its hallmarks are a rapid peer review and publication process with open access to all readers. IEEE Access has an impact factor of 3.557, an Eigenfactor of 0.0186, and an article influence score of 1.098 (per 2017 JCR).

Dr. Rute C. Sofia becomes an IEEE Senior Member

10.2018: Rute C. Sofia, Senior Researcher of COPELABS and Associate Professor at Universidade Lusófona has been named Senior Member of the IEEE. Dr. Sofia's research interests are focused on network architectures and protocols, with special emphasis in mobility management and modeling; IoT; pervasive wireless systems.

Senior member is the highest IEEE professional grade for which members may apply. Only 10% of IEEE over 400,000 members in more than 160 countries have achieved senior grade. This level is a recognition of professional maturity and sustained achievements. It requires at least 10 years of membership and a demonstrated significant performance over at least five years of professional practice.

IEEE is the world's largest association of technical professionals. It seeks to advance electrical and electronic engineering, telecommunications, computer engineering and similar disciplines, both technically and educationally. In addition to engineers and scientists, IEEE's membership includes professionals such as computer scientists, software developers, information technology professionals, physicists.

The Internet-of-Things represent a future trend of the Internet, in which massive numbers of net- worked objects are assumed to have the capability of sharing data collected through sensing activities. It is envisioned that such objects are not dedicated hardware modules embedded specific machines communicating via proprietary wired or wireless networks to dedicated soft- ware applications. On contrary, Internet-of-Things may have a more autonomic deployment, in which objects are autonomous and communicate via existing IP based networks. Due to its distributed nature, there is the need to rely on autonomic networking to improve the efficiency while reducing the operational costs of Internet-of-Things frameworks. This paper aims to provide a study about the best data plane to support Internet-of-Things, and an analysis about the best model to support its distributed autonomic behavior.

Information-centric routing for opportunistic wireless networks - Scientific Paper

 This poster describes DABBER, a protocol developed to extend the reach of Named Data Networking into wireless environments. Our key contribution lies in the fact that DABBER supports communication in op-portunistic wireless environments by relying on routing metrics that take into consideration node availability and centrality measures; data reachability metrics. The poster provides an overview to the DABBER architecture , and to the available open-source implementation.

COPELABS in Ciência 2018

07.2018: COPELABS researchers participated in Ciência 2018 from July 2nd to July 4th. In addition to the regular stand, COPELABS presented a talk in the Smart Cities/Cidades Inteligentes Session (15h30m, July 4th), "People-to-people Communication in Emergency Scenarios", by P. Mendes, R. Sofia, J. Soares, M. Tavares, O. Aponte.

The H2020 UMOBILE opportunistic wireless communication has also been shown during July 4th, Pavillion 5, demos, via a demonstration of communication with intermittent Internet access, supported by the COPELABS application Oi! and by the novel routing protocol DABBER. These contributions have been developed by COPELABS in the H2020 UMOBILE project, grant number 645124.

H2020 UMOBILE People-to-People Communications (PoC2 demo)

06.2018: COPELABS researchers Paulo Mendes, Miguel Tavares, and Omar Aponte have been developing the "People-to-people Communications (PoC2) H2020 UMOBILE Demo, together with partner Senception Lda. This demo relies on an instant messenger application (Oi!) and on a novel routing protocol (DABBER) that extends the reach of Named Data Networking to wireless environments.

 The H2020 UMOBILE opportunistic wireless communication shall also be shown during July 4th, Pavillion 5, demos, via a demonstration of communication with intermittent Internet access, supported by the COPELABS application Oi! and by the novel routing protocol .

 These contributions have been developed by COPELABS in the H2020 UMOBILE project, grant number 645124.

The Role of Smart Data in Inference of Human Behavior and Interaction - book Chapter

04.2018: This chapter explores features, concepts, and provides guidelines concerning the role and applicability of smart data captured in a non-intrusive way, in the inference and contextualization of human behavior and interaction.

The chapter starts by introducing aspects related to human interaction, for instance, how to define and to best model physical and psychological proximity; models for social awareness and social contextualization. The next part of the chapter deals with interaction inference and interaction contextualization, namely: classification models that best suit the inference of behavior in the vere of smart data; challenges in regards to small data capture and behavior inference derived from small data, in particular when considering decentralized, mobile cyber-physical systems; guidelines to model interaction based on pervasive wireless sensing systems, including available middleware and systems (tools). The chapter then provides information concerning specific applicability use-cases, namely, Points of Interest detection via smart data, and how smart data can be used to boost social interaction in a pervasive, non-intrusive way. The chapter concludes with a set of recommendations.

DABBER: Data reAchaBility BasEd Routing for Named-data Networking Wireless Environments

03.2018: The European UMOBILE project is working on methods to extend NDN towards opportunistic wireless networks. In this context, COPELABS has been implementing an NFD extension, called NDN-OPP, which supports NDN multi-hop wireless communication: NDN-OPP V1.0 for Android does broadcast of Interest packets over a Wi-Fi direct network. 

In order to reduce resource consumption in a NDN multi-hop wireless networks, COPELABS, SENCEPTION and ATHENA have created the DABBER routing protocol, which allows selective forwarding of Interest packets based on the local announcement of name prefixes + node awareness about the properties of neighbour nodes (centrality and availability). DABBER aims to operate on a point-to-point wireless network (e.g. Wi-Fi direct, DTN) as well as on a broadcast network (e.g. ah-hoc Wi-Fi).
 DABBER has been submitted to IRTF, and was presented in the ICNRG meeting in London (Mar 17th - Mar 23rd 2018).

12.2017: Within the European project H2020 UMOBILE the research group SITI @COPELABS, University Lusófona, is investigating the usage of NDN- Named Data Networking to extend data-centric communications into more dynamic wireless scenarios, such as emergency situations, or accessible communications. ACM ICN 2017 Tutorial on UMOBILE

12.2017:

COPELABS participated in the ACM ICN conference organizing a tutorial in the context of the H2020 UMOBILE project. UMOBILE integrates the principles of Delay Tolerant Networking (DTN) and Information Centric Networking (ICN) in a common framework. By relying on an instance of the UMOBILE architecture, users are able to share information directly with other peers without relying on infrastructure or expensive connectivity services; providers are able to provide services in remote areas as well as in scenarios with intermittent internet access. TUM Kolloquium: Contextual Interaction inference and characterization derived from wireless network mining

This talk is focused on wireless network mining and on context and behavior characterization derived from the application of non-intrusive, pervasive sensing approaches in connected wireless environments. The research described in this talk goes over the development of networking solutions and mechanisms that can assist data capture and distributed inference of roaming habits in a way that may lead to social interaction stimulation (and as a consequence, to a better design of networking communication).

BEING: Inference of Human Behavior via Network Mining

The BEING project (2018-2020) is focused on contextualization derived from data captured via wireless networks, and which today any device overhears. BEING expects to contribute to the development of pervasive wireless solutions, as well as studies in mining in wireless networks, to assist in a better and non-intrusive inference of human behavior, from an individual and collective perspective.

CRAVE: Cooperative Autonomous Vehicles

CRAVE is an activity from COPELABS focused on exploiting vehicle cooperation as fog nodes to improve perception of position in surrounding environments.

The COPELABS IoT Lab

The IoT Lab is an experimental project of COPELABS dedicated to the exploration and analysis of networking architectures and communication protocols for multiple IoT environments, e.g., personal IoT and industrial IoT.  A few aspects being worked upon concern protocolar transmission and unified abstraction models for edge computing, as well as the relevancy of novel communication models (e.g., ICN) for IoT.
